Cultivating a Global Perspective in Secondary Students
Immersive Education Academy is launching a program for new form 1, 2 and 3 students at Tung Wah Group of Hospitals’ Lee Ching Dea Memorial College. This program is designed to build students’ vocabulary and to incorporate a range of global news topics into each lesson. Ko Tsz Kwan, a student from Lee Ching Dea Memorial College commented that “the Program is good for learning words. I can use the words that I’ve learnt in my everyday life. I know more about the current news too. I did not watch news before I joined the Program but I watch more after joining the Program.”
Secondary students in the early forms are at a prime stage for advanced learning. One of the ways Lee Ching Dea Memorial Colleges is expected to use the program is to introduce students to a variety of topics happening around the world. Since the students are located in a globalized city such as Hong Kong, teachers find it important that students learn about the world around them. Discussions of world events require that learners have the necessary vocabulary to understand the news content. The development of their analytical thinking also is expected to have a positive effect when the students are faced with the discussion and individual response sections of the DSE examination. News content is provided through the student through NBC Learn, a learning partner of Immersive Education Academy.
Lee Ching Dea Memorial College, located in Wanchai District, is a government-subsidized secondary public school. Founded in 1970 and currently managed by Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, the co-ed school’s motto is Diligence, Frugality, Loyalty and Faithfulness.
